Hyperfocal distance calculator guide
Hyperfocal Distance Calculator for Landscape Photography
Hyperfocal distance is the focus distance that gives you the deepest usable sharpness for a given camera, focal length and aperture. Landscape photographers use it to balance foreground detail with sharp distant backgrounds.
Fast answer: In Simple DoF Calculator, choose your camera, lens and aperture. The app shows hyperfocal distance so you know where to focus for maximum depth of field.
When hyperfocal distance matters
Use hyperfocal distance when a scene includes important detail close to the camera and far away, such as rocks in the foreground and mountains on the horizon. It is less useful when you want intentional background blur.
How to calculate it in the app
- Select your camera or sensor format.
- Enter your lens focal length.
- Choose the aperture you want to shoot.
- Read the hyperfocal distance result.
- Focus around that distance, then confirm the near focus limit covers the closest subject that matters.
Landscape workflow
Start around f/8 or f/11, calculate hyperfocal distance, and check whether the near limit includes the closest foreground object. If it does not, try a smaller aperture or a wider focal length.
